The Institute for Medicines and Medical Devices participated in the initiative Western Balkans Mobility Scheme. It is a pilot programme launched within a project POLICY ANSWERS – R&I POLICY making, Implementation and Support in the WEsteRn BalkanS, aimed at fostering regional cooperation and supporting researchers in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia. The POLICY ANSWERS project is funded under the Horizon Europe programme. Its objective is to enhance regional cooperation and sustainable support in research and innovation activities stimulated by mobility and, by encouraging connectivity of the Western Balkan countries, support economic growth, joint regional market, societal resilience and the convergence of the Western Balkans with the European Union. As part of the Mobility Scheme, CInMED carried out the project Prevention of teratogenic effects of valproate (PREVALT) the aim of which was to analyse regulatory measures related to valproate prescribing in Montenegro. The research was successfully carried out through the collaboration of Veselinka Vukićević, Head of the Pharmacovigilance Department in CInMED and a PhD candidate of the Medical Faculty of the University of Montenegro and her mentor, PhD Sandra Vezmar Kovačević from the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Belgrade. One of the key results of the project, published in the journal Therapeutic Advances in Drug Safety, is the paper entitled How effective is the implementation of the valproate pregnancy prevention programme in Montenegro? – A 7-year national retrospective study. Results of the project were presented at international and national conferences in the country and abroad. The cooperation between CInMED and the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Belgrade, as a renowned scientific-research institution, represents an outstanding opportunity to improve our scientific research capacities. Through scientific-research projects in the field of rational and safe use of medicines, CInMED creates conditions for the adoption of appropriate, evidence-based and timely regulatory decisions.
